Instruction on Parting From The Four Attachments
by
Sakya Pandita Kunga Gyaltshen
I prostrate at the feet of the holy Guru.
Generally, one who has obtained a human body endowed with the
prerequisites met with the precious teaching of the Buddha, and produced
a genuine mind (of faith) should correctly practise the holy Dharma.
-More-
That person should practise the Parting From The Four Attachments. If it
is asked what (this practice is, it is answered): non-attachment to this
life, non-attachment to the three realms of existence, non-attachment to
one's own purpose, and non-attachment to substantiality and
characteristics.
If this is explained, (understand it to mean the following). It is not
worth being attached to this life since it is like a bubble of water as
the time of death is uncertain. The three realms of existence are like
poisonous fruits, since though being presently delicious they are
accompanied by future harm. Whoever is attached to them is surely
deluded. If one is attached to one's own purpose, it is like cherishing
the son of an enemy. Although the present happiness appears to be
joyous, in the end it will bring certain harm upon oneself. Therefore,
if one is attached to one's own purpose, though one will have temporary
happiness, eventually one will go to the lower realms of existence.
If one is manifestly attached to substantiality (i.e. that which has
efficiency such as a vase or a pillar) and characteristics (i.e.
'this is real', 'it is empty', 'it is devoid of extremes', and so on),
it is like grasping, for water in a mirage. Although there is presently
an appearance of water, there is nothing to be drunk. Though this world
of existence appears to the deluded mind, if it is examined through
wisdom then no essential or inherent nature is found to exist.
Therefore, having understood not to place the mind upon the past or
future, nor to settle the consciousness upon the present, one should
know all dharmas to be devoid of all mentally-created extremes.
By acting in this manner-through non-attachment to this life-one will
not be born in the lower realms. Through non-attachment to the three
realms one will not be born in the world of existence. Through
non-attachment to one's own purpose, one will not take birth as a
Shravaka or Pratyekabuddha. Through non-attachment to substantiality
and characteristics, one will quickly attain complete and perfect
enlightenment.
(This unerring advice on Parting From The Four Attachments-a
composition by Sakya Pandita on the original thought of the great
Shri Sakyapa (Kunga Nyingpo)-is thus completed.]
